Potential effects of Haritaki on tumors

Scientific experiments and studies that evaluate potential effects of Haritaki on tumors.

In several studies, it has been suggested that Haritaki may have a potential supportive effect in reducing ulcerations, meaning it could potentially influence the development of ulcers.

Please note: As we are not permitted to make specific statements about health effects due to EU regulations, we would like to refer to relevant secondary literature, which can be found, for example, in the PubMed database or the National Library of Health. We recommend searching with the term “Terminalia Chebula.”

At present, there is no scientifically confirmed health benefit of Haritaki recognized by the EFSA (EU Authority for Science, Safe Food, and Sustainability). The described experiences are based on traditional applications and individual reports. The available scientific studies should therefore be evaluated and interpreted individually.

Quote from the study: We found that topical application of TC at dose of 30 mg/kg b. wt. mouse effectively suppressed oxidative stress and deregulated activation of inflammatory mediators and tumorigenesis. Histological findings further supported the protective effects of TC against DMBA/croton oil-induced cutaneous damage."

Antiulcerogenic activity of Terminalia chebula fruit in experimentally induced ulcer in rats.

Quote from the study: Animals pretreated with doses of 200 and 500 mg/kg hydroalcoholic extract showed significant reduction in lesion index, total affected area and percentage of lesion in comparison with control group (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01) in the aspirin, ethanol and cold restraint stress-induced ulcer models. Similarly extracts increased mucus production in aspirin and ethanol-induced ulcer models. At doses of 200 and 500 mg/kg of T. chebula extract showed antisecretory activity in pylorus ligated model, which lead to a reduction in the gastric juice volume, free acidity, total acidity, and significantly increased gastric pH.

These findings indicate that hydroalcoholic extract of the fruit T. chebula displays potential antiulcerogenic activity. This activity thus lends pharmacological credence to the suggested use of the plant as a natural remedy in the treatment or management of ulcer.

Pharmacological evaluation of fruits of Terminalia belerica Roxb. for antiulcer activity

Quote from the study: The antiulcer activity of 70% methanolic extract of fruits of Terminalia belerica Roxb. (Combretaceae) was evaluated using ethanol induced, aspirin induced, cold stress restraint and pylorus ligated ulcer in rats. The methanolic extract (100, 250, 500, 1000 mg/kg, p.o.) significantly suppressed the peptic ulcer induced by ethanol. Methanolic extract at a dose of 500 mg/kg showed, promising antiulcer activity hence, this dose was selected for further evaluation of antiulcer studies. The methanolic extract (500 mg/kg) showed significant (p<0.05) reduction in gastric volume, free acidity, total acidity, ulcer index, protein and pepsin content and increase in mucus content in pylorus ligated rats as compared to control. Treatment with Terminalia belerica methanolic extract further provided significant antiulcer protection against aspirin induced ulcers but not in cold stress restraint model. These results suggested that the 70% methanolic extract of Terminalia belerica increased resistance to necrotizing agents, providing a direct protective effect on the gastric mucosa and exhibited antiulcer effect.
